Dr Alexa Roxborough

Dr. Alexa Roxborough CPsychol BA (Hons.) MRes DClinPsy PGDip

Alexa is a chartered specialist clinical psychologist in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and a registered Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions council, UK and the British Psychological Society (BPS). After completing her doctoral training at University College London, she undertook a postgraduate diploma in CBT at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. This qualification took her from competent to expert at delivering CBT, and entitles her to accreditation with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), the lead organisation for CBT in the UK. Alexa is interested in 'third wave' CBT approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Solution-Focused Therapy, which, in her experience, can be very effective when a client's difficulties do not fit neatly into a single CBT disorder-specific model.

Alexa moved to the U.K. from Ireland in 2008 to undertake her master's degree, after graduating from University College Dublin with a B.A. in psychology. In the eight years since she embarked on her career in mental health, Alexa has worked in a wide variety of primary and secondary care settings within the NHS and the prison service. She has gained significant experience, and is skilled in helping clients to manage a range of psychological problems such as depression, the full spectrum of anxiety disorders, personality disorder, psychosis and work-related stress, amongst several others. Alongside her private work, she is currently employed as a CBT specialist in a NHS psychological therapy service for patients with complex needs. As well as delivering therapy, this position involves teaching and supervising other mental health professionals in CBT. Alexa is also involved in quality improvement research. She strongly believes in adhering closely to the scientific evidence base in delivering treatment, and values her role as a scientist-practitioner.

Alexa's doctoral training exposed her to a broad spectrum of therapeutic approaches, including Schema Therapy and Mentalization-based Therapy (MBT). Although specialist in CBT, Alexa draws on her knowledge of other models (e.g. psychodynamic, systemic) when formulating clients' difficulties. She believes in formulating the person rather than the problem, and focusing on clients' strengths and areas of resilience. Alexa's highest priority is creating a warm, collaborative, and supportive therapeutic alliance, in which clients can feel safe to take risks and challenge themselves, enabling them to live preferred, satisfying and more meaningful lives.
