Dr Elena Gil Rodriguez

Dr Elena Gil-Rodriguez DPsych, CPsychol, AFBPsS
Clinical Affiliate, CPG

Elena is a Counselling Psychologist who is both chartered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). She is also an Associate Fellow of the BPS, a full member of the Division of Counselling Psychology and a professional member of the Association for Contextual and Behavioral Science (ACBS). Elena completed her Counselling Psychology doctorate at City, University of London, and has experience of working in both primary and secondary care in the NHS as well as in the voluntary sector. Since qualifying in 2009, Elena has worked in private practice and academia where she has lectured on various Counselling and Clinical Psychology university training programmes.

As a warm, compassionate and resourceful psychologist, Elena employs a therapeutic approach which is individualised and tailored to each client. She views the therapeutic process as being a joint and collaborative endeavour to tackling problems, and draws upon a variety of evidence-based theories and techniques. Within a safe and supportive therapeutic space, Elena ensures that therapy is focused and goal oriented, to foster and empower change and improve psychological functioning, psychological flexibility and well-being. Above all, she endeavours to enable clients to identify where they want to go in life, harness their own inner resources to move in their chosen direction by doing what works, and make the changes in their lives that they want, even in the presence of obstacles.
Elena works within the framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), whilst also drawing on more traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other, more recent approaches such as the use of mindfulness and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). All of this is soundly underpinned by humanistic and person-centred principles derived from her initial training in bereavement counselling, prior to going on to train as a Counselling Psychologist - she considers these fundamental principles to remain very central to her work.

During her time in private practice, Elena has worked with adults across the lifespan bringing a wide range of concerns that range from depression and a broad variety of anxiety disorders (generalised anxiety disorder, social/performance anxiety, panic, phobias, health anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder) through to stress and work-related stress, burnout, low self-esteem and low self-confidence, shame, self-criticism and perfectionism, problems with decision making, anger management, insomnia/sleep difficulties, relationship difficulties and 'mid-life crisis'/loss of direction in life. She also has considerable experience working with binge-eating and problems relating to particular life events and transitions, including bereavement and loss.

Alongside her clinical work, Elena has also been extensively involved in the academic sector since qualifying, lecturing on Counselling Psychology Doctoral training programmes at London Metropolitan University and Roehampton University, as well as guest lecturing on the Clinical Psychology Doctoral programme at Royal Holloway, University of London. In addition, she has taught on a variety of Masters' level counselling and psychotherapy training programmes at Roehampton University and Goldsmiths, University of London. Most recently, Elena lectured full time on the BA Psychosocial Studies programme at Goldsmiths, which she also convened for some time. Prior to training as a psychologist, Elena had a career in hospital pharmacy that spanned a decade.
