What does DBT involve?
Each person on the programme attends one individual therapy session and one skills building session per week. Prior to committing to the programme, there is an initial full assessment and a period of programme orientation. Individual therapy involves working intensively with a DBT therapist on specific, targeted problem behaviours in a systematic, structured manner with the main aims of:
- Reducing suicidal, self-harming, violent or self-destructive behaviour
- Offering support and assistance when problems arise and 'the going gets tough'
- Increasing and improving the quality, pleasure and joy in life
- Increasing skills to deal with a range of emotions, people and life's problems
- Learning to manage distress in a skilful way
- Increasing self-respect
- Achieving individual goals
The group skills sessions are lead by members of the DBT team. Skills developed include:
Mindfulness: focusing attention on one thing at a time, in the present
Distress Tolerance: learning how to acknowledge and accept difficult situations, and how to survive them without reacting in a way that is harmful
Emotion Regulation: learning about the functions of emotions, how to decrease vulnerability and how to increase positive emotional experiences
Interpersonal Effectiveness: a range of skills that are aimed at helping people to become more effective in their interactions with others, e.g.: learning how to be assertive in communication
